The Nude

Having posted a Degas nude in comparison with a contemporary academic artist's figure drawing, I just have to post an elegant concise nude by one of my hero artists. Richard Diebenkorn.

I do admire some of Richards' work, but this is rubbish. Yes, rubbish. It looks like he drew it blind in about twelve seconds whilst staring out the window wondering what to cook for lunch.

Wow! You think Diebenkorn's a better draftsman than even I'd give him credit for ... if he can draw that in 12 seconds, hat's off to him. I draw all the time, but I find that drawing of Diebenkorn's very accomplished. It allows no error, every line speaks, it is elegant, concise, and arch. He's in the zone. It's apparent simplicity makes it seem easier than it is.

Obviously it comes out of Matisse. He's clearly thinking about Matisse. But if you're curious, have a look also at Picasso's famous "Vollard Suite" images. Some of the linear decisions are so amazing in the number of "problems" they must solve in very concise and seemingly simple lines.

I won't say Diebenkorn is up to Picasso's standard in this work. But he's doing okay. Very okay.

Even Ingres has simple drawings. Simple for Ingres. Hard for others.
